The upcoming model, the 2018 Mitsubishi Pajero brings a lot of excitement, especially in America. Originally introduced as a prototype in 1973 at Tokyo Motor Show, Mitsubishi Pajero has been under production since 1983. The model was named after Leopardus Pajero, which is native to Patagonia plateau of South Argentina.
Interestingly, the word ‘Pajero’ is a common abusive term in Spanish. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why it has different names in different markets of the world. It is also known as Mitsubishi Montero in the United States and Mitsubishi Shogun in the United Kingdom.
2018 Mitsubishi Pajero – Innovations in the Dashboard, Storage and Safety Features
This full-size SUV will be completely redesigned for 2018 model year. Apart from the reintroduction of Pajero, Mitsubishi has also announced major changes across rest of its lineup. When this new model will arrive, a completely refreshed Outlander would have already been launched along with redesigned ASX model.
Mitsubishi’s design philosophy for its upcoming models has been previewed recently by concept models unveiled at recent Motor Shows. Future models from the company will feature significant improvements in terms of off-road capability, safety system, fuel economy and overall driving experience. All these updates will be available in upcoming models and that is also true for 2018 Mitsubishi Pajero.
The new generation of this SUV will be based on three different concept models, namely Concept AR, XR-PHEV and GC-PHEV. Among these, the GC-PHEV concept will be most influential for upcoming Pajero model. It’s not surprising actually, given that ‘GC’ acronym stands for ‘Grand Cruiser’
When unveiled, GC-PHEV concept had a plug-in hybrid drivetrain under its hood. This made it evident that the company intends to design a full-size SUV that is eco-friendly and fuel efficient as well. Since 2018 Mitsubishi Pajero will be based on this GC-PHEV concept, it will have very few things in common with the previous model. Just like the concept model, it will have S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) system along with modern safety features.
Powertrain Details of 2018 Mitsubishi Pajero
The hybrid powertrain of GC-PHEV is a combination of a 3.0-litre V6 unit and an electric motor, with power being transmitted via an eight-speed auto transmission unit. As far as production model is concerned, it will come with a different hybrid system, which uses a four-cylinder gasoline engine along with high capacity lithium-ion battery and electric motor. The 2018 Mitsubishi Pajero will be able to exclusively use electric power, although at lower speeds only.
Some car enthusiasts are sceptical about the combination of a futuristic design and new hybrid powertrain that this mode offers. It is being feared that this new generation model will compromise on performance and off-road capabilities for getting a more appealing SUV. However, Mitsubishi has stated that Pajero will remain true to its character and it will continue to a full-size SUV that offers great off-road driving experience.
